“Neko Case Rm 16”
That was my identity in 4th grade, so that’s what I wrote on the cover of the records I brought to school – The Go-Go’s “We Got The Beat” 45 and The Best Of Blondie. I had bought both with my own money at the Fred Meyer on 4th Plain Boulevard in Vancouver, Washington. (NOT as good as the one in Bellingham on Lakeway! THEY had a 3-D spinning cut-out of HEART!)
I went to the library with my records under my arm. It was always needly rain outside which was fine but I never had a proper coat so I didn’t even entertain the thought of going out. And besides I didn’t have any steady friends as this was my first year at John Rodger’s Elementary, so there was no one to play with. Warm and dry with Debbie Harry was the obvious choice…
