I thought I'd stick another "Noticing" post in between two "Uneasy Vistas" posts, otherwise, things may feel a little bleak.
- Blue tarps and their fibers EVERYWHERE. My friend and editor, Summer, brought this up and I immediately felt the mutual cringe like a punch in the gut. They don’t even last a year before they start to break apart. Their fibers are embedded in EVERYTHING! Wood piles, empty lots, car frames, lawnmowers, fences, grass, trees, and even bird nests. Their fibers are like Styrofoam packing peanuts (another Uneasy Vista) – they don’t break down and you can never clean them all up. They stick to whatever they touch, then they begin to rot into threads. Plastic is petroleum, and petroleum’s fingers are like needles just boring into everything.
- A tiny heart and liver on the floor that I almost step on.
- Maggots under the garbage can lid. Not that I think they don’t have every right to be there ;)
- A pile of mattresses in someone’s yard stacked in a fire pit ring right next to the river. This one fills me with total despair.
- Abandoned strollers.
- Loud filthy plastic toys in “free” piles. Too close.
- Used plastic disposable diapers everywhere. Against the green of trees. Any “need” that was created.
- ”Lost” underwear in a parking lot or behind a building. Though, one lone mateless shoe in a random place does sometimes make me laugh? Ok, every time :)
I’ll cross that bridge when I find the truck with the bridge in back.
Your Noticing got me to thinking about the upcoming Cayamo experience. Perhaps you have it all figured out already....and that's great if so. In case you want a couple ideas:
How about a nature hike at Tortola?
Perhaps a gathering of your Entering The Lung followers onboard would be fun. This type of thing is common - last year Richard Thompson, Grace Potter and Kathleen Edwards all hosted similar events...and of course Jim Lauderdale gathered for Tai Chi every morning (but he is "special" LOL)
Don't be surprised if you have some huge fans in the other bands...Hogslop String Band were overjoyed to get to play with Kathleen Edwards!
Speaking of Kathleen Edwards she hosted a late morning "coffee" music cafe, and if you know her she would have some amazing ideas....
And we know from Durham about your movie critique chops!
Cheers
