Howe Gelb, a well-known Tucsonan and master of Giant Sand is always up to something creative, usually several things. He’s best known for being a musician but his gift for collaboration knows no bounds, so I was not surprised when I received a request to make a cameo appearance in a movie and was told that Howe had a hand in it. Enter movie maker/director Geoff Marslett and the film he wrote with Howe, Boarding House Reach. (Which was the film’s original title…)
My first reaction to the request was severe excitement which quickly gelled into shit-scared. I didn’t know if I could act? (Still don’t.) But mostly I’d be singing in the movie so I thought if I couldn’t figure out how to do that I needed to go work in a bank. The shoot was coming up quickly and I had to make a decision. The filming was in Colorado (waaaaaay out of the way) and I’d have to fly (my least favorite thing) on Halloween (my favorite thing) and only two days before I had to leave on a long tour with The New Pornographers. No pressure…
