My daughter serves and bartends at Joe Allen, a lot of celebs seem to like it there, theater district institution. Walk up 8th or 9th to have less crowds, they are on 46th. Crazy location but glad to see you are working on a musical, that's cool. Still sad I missed the NPs tour in the east :(
I have no tips about dining in NYC. I just want to tell you every time I read one of your posts it is an occasion of soul-filling wonder that leaves me in a better state of mind. Every time! Thank you!!!!!
Wonderful that you are working on a musical - can’t wait to hear more.
if at all possible head down to the West Village and some of the lovely side streets like Perry, Charles, Bank, Bedford. Some great coffee shops there like Oslo on 10th or Don’t Feed the Allogators on Bleecker near Christopher. Lovely restaurants like Via Carota, Buvette, Rosemary’s… really old beautiful buildings around that area and much quieter…I can totally relate to the worry about people biking, scooting not paying attention!
idk if the subway still works this way, but i like the story about brian eno in berlin working on a record w david bowie. each morning, he'd look at how much change he had in his pocket, and would work out how far he could go on the ubahn with enough left over for the return ride. then he'd go to whatever station/neighbourhood that turned out to be and spend an hour or so walking around. of course, the usual contingencies are to be considered. thanks for this note neko it brightened my afternoon a lot.
Great read. Makes me happy to know you’re walking the streets of my hometown, loved the New Pornos show at Bk Steele. After years of hearing about it I finally made it to Bar Centrale near where you’re staying and next to Joe Allen as mentioned earlier. Cool unmarked Broadway speakeasy vibe spot . Other than that there’s Don Antonio for pizza from Naples bit further north. As mentioned Via Carota is one of the most consistently good places in town, Buvette is good too. Also you probably went to the recently reopened Superiority Burger but if not you should, best vegetarian eats and somehow cheffy but punk. Enjoy!
Waving to you from Harlem. I have a few recommendations. I went to “Rule of Thirds” Japanese brunch in BK and it knocked my socks off, the space too. Nearer to you is Xian Famous Foods, I recommend the N2. Curious to know more about what you’re writing. Be well
It is our wedding Anniversary today and your story made us smile. We always wanted to go to NYC which is quite a ways from Adelaide, the way I feel lately I don't think I'll ever see it or even America again, I have your blog to help travel in your words. Ciao

Have you read NK Jemisin's The City We Became??? Backs up your dimensional theory of New York and is a delightful sci-fi romp to boot ✨
YES! I have been meaning to read this for a while. Thank you for the reminder!

Those bike lanes are scary!
Kung Fu Little Steamed Buns Ramen at 48th and 8th is fabulous.

I am glad to hear you *can* die, but I selfishly hope you don’t, for a while longer. It does look amazingly like a solar eclipse, though.
You are a glorious dork, one of my favorite dorks.
I want that quesadilla. I Love squash blossoms
If you're down to jump on the subway, R or N to 36st. The taco truck on 37th and 5th Avenue. Tacos el Bronco. The best tacos in NY.
