To celebrate the last day of the year I bought a vinyl copy of Master of Puppets by Metallica at my tiny town’s record store. It felt good! I brought it home and cranked it as I made a pot of soup. I remember every single note. I remember seeing the show at Seattle Center with my friend Mike Moen when I was 16. It was incredible. We took the ferry back to Bremerton after the show. I ended up with the flu and puking in another friend’s kitchen sink. A dick move I was somehow forgiven for? I was desperate. I STILL feel bad about it!
Wow your adventure is hauntingly like mine in Brooklyn 2 nights ago seeing Patti Smith on the eve of her 76th birthday. I wan't feeling great but I double masked and went. Hid in the back of the bus back up to Vermont last night and I am paying the price of a case of flu. Was it worth it. Yep.
Neko, I owe Metallica as well. My first time going backstage - Poplar Creek, Hoffman Estates, IL Metallica was opening for Ozzy - 1986. It was a life changing experience for me. I knew at that moment I had to be part of the music business. Happy New Year!
Oh my gosh, I didn’t know till now about Dallas. I’m so sorry.
I saw the Sadies maybe 12 years ago at the Rip Tide in San Francisco, way the hell out by the beach - I was in town for work, struck up a conversation with a stranger during dinner at a bar in the Mission, he told me he was going to see them later that night and invited me along. I had never heard of the club, and the SF beach is a dark, cold, remote place. I was pretty sure the story would end up with my body washing up on the shore a few days later, but I said screw it and took the offer anyway. Instead it ended up with me standing in the front row about 3’ from the mic stands - Dallas literally apologized for spitting on me & the person next to me, we were that packed in to the tiny club. One of my favorite shows ever.
Amen for Butterbeans! What is rescuing our lives today like Metallica did then for you? Forest baths, beautiful music that leaves me feeling different at the end of the song, hugs from my family and rides on my horse are on my list!
This New Year's Eve I've decided to let the 60's rock fly again. My dad passed away back in December 2018 and I haven't listened to anything from the 60's since. Kind of think he'd want me to listen to Santana and Jefferson Airplane again. Not that he'd have ever wanted me to stop listening to them. Anyway, those are my sounds tonight and I'm loving it. Again. Finally.
On the other hand, I haven't put Master of Puppets on in a good long while, either! \m/
Glad you ended your difficult year with something so lived in. It's true, I'll never be able to pay all my favorites back for all they've done for me!
Great idea and following your lead. Butterbean is the first song in my new Right Now playlist for 2023. And here's a Whammy Kiss and a Song for a Future Generation to all you cats out there. Onward and upward in a new year!
Happy New Year, Neko. Reading this newsletter was really a boon to my 2022. Thanks for all the lovely writing you've given and continue to give to us all.
I never connected with Metallica, but I connected HARD with "Butterbean" and the whole Whammy album. I first heard it when I checked out the vinyl album from the public library in 1987 when I was 13. I kept renewing it for months until finally I got a stereo for my birthday and made myself a tape.

That piano has a story! 🎶❄️
Stoked to have found your sub this year Neko. Keep ‘em coming.
Thank you for sharing your thoughts, musings, frustrations, and hopes. So, rock stars are human beings, too!

We are all up in 60’s R&B for new years! Happy 2023 to you
I had “The Harder Things Get…” on today…. I had a most pleasant time listening to it while pottering about the house. Hi5
