I love my vicarious non-city life through these letters! In a related Beaver story, I did a comic con last weekend and Jerry Mathers aka Beaver Cleaver was there. ok, a stretch. xxk
Two years ago beavers built a HUGE lodge right next to a relatively popular trail below my house. They knew that people passed by there regularly, but they didn't seem to care. It has been so much fun to watch them. I too was hopeful about babies, but I have yet to see one. I almost peed my pants one day when I saw a smaller rodent by the lodge. I automatically assumed it was a baby beaver, but it was a muskrat. Disappointing but still VERY cool. The most surprising thing I've seen in that pond is a river otter. As it turns out, apparently this isn't surprising at all. Beavers and otters can share the same ponds, since their diet is totally different. Otters love beaver ponds because fish are often trapped in them, making hunting a lot easier. I read somewhere that they will sometimes den in abandoned beaver lodges too. The migratory birds love that pond too.
They're being reintroduced in the UK at the moment (after being hunted to extinction). The beaver takeover can't come soon enough here. Very happy for you and yours 🦫
Wow! Beaver fever. Baby-beaver fever, even. They are adorable. They make me feel incredibly lazy, though -- I call my cat Cecilia a beaver because she likes to move my possessions around in the night and make a big pile to isolate her food dish (from her sister, who's never tried to steal her food -- Cecilia is paranoid). I am looking forward to lots more beaver content!
If you haven’t yet read “Eager” by Ben Goldfarb you will eat it up! And the YouTube series New England Forests’s Beaver Pond Wildlife series is incredibly absorbing. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=zGyMLG2wnBE
They make the greatest little noises on land.
And it was just the full Beaver Moon a couple nights ago!

I am now a true Beaver Believer
“Beaver tracks lead to beaver snacks.” Love it! If I use it in a poem, I’ll credit you 😄
My neurodivergent brain is really struggling to resist posting a beaver joke. You're welcome!
Is a trail cam a possibility? 🦫 I would love to see their comings and goings!
Just in time for the Beaver Moon this week! Love it.

Here is a rescue beaver building a Christmas dam in its house. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=-ImdlZtOU80
