I have managed to make it home for exactly two days, which makes a total of four since April 16th. To say I’ve missed it does no justice. As I sit here on the porch, I hear so many of the sounds that make my baseline consciousness relax: the shuffling of the horses; the crickets in the grass; the pop and tick of the electric fence counting off two-second intervals; the deep peaceful breathing of my dog, Coco, as she naps away on the porch next to me. I am her lookout. We take turns watching for danger.
I LOVE your descriptions of the Lung, and it resonates. Moving from Chicago to Santa Fe, my life has slowed down in new ways, the last five years. I spent yesterday watching brown grasshoppers and black crickets dodge the fire ants, listened to the piñon jays and tit mouses calling to their partners and nests. I love just watching my dog look for the baby snakes or whiptail lizards — occasionally a cute bunny — (luckily he’s slow so never catches ANY of them, just runs around bouncing, trying), listening to the sounds, feeling my skin get taut in the sun.
That’s the trade for a touring musician. Home time, especially being an “older” musician, can call like an alluring siren. Comforts of home , people you miss, things that make you happy, especially animals that you love make it hard to leave.
But then you make the music and the audiences appreciation, and then that siren song call calls you back. ♥️
Your gonna be here at the beloved Fonda in Los Angeles in 2 days & I have no budget for attendance. Maybe just come over & soak in the positive vibes outside..
I loved this! I’ve enjoyed your music for years, and this entry really resonated with me. I felt much closer to you in this entry than any other work by you. Those Luna Moths are a wonderful sight! You were very much blessed to be able to see one!
In light of this post I was paying closer attention to the aerial combat between the tweeters and the skeeters at your show in Denver tonight, thinking how into it you would be if you weren't on the job. Then, of course, you let us know that you SEE EVERYTHING! Thanks. It was such a lovely show.
Gosh, you are one of my favorite writers (therefore a favorite observer) of nature. Thank you for showing us what you see and hear in The Lung. And I love that The Kid returns to your flowers/nectar feeder after wintering down south. I'm watching my own little guy at my windowbox nectar feeder (supplemented by several potted salvia) right now - a male Anna's, but I also have black-chinned hummingbirds in spring-fall here too. I keep the window beside my work desk open, when not too hot here in the valley, so I can hear them chirping and buzzing and see them in my own peripheral vision throughout the day. Poppies peaked here maybe a month ago. I hope you get to see yours.
Glad you are having time at home. On a side note: are you following news about the Killer Whales attacking the yachts in Spain? People gotta a lot of Nerve indeed!
Had to google ”fox fires” because interestingly we call aurora borealis fox fires (”revontulet”) in Finland.
Nature 💚

This has been a peaceful journey to read, I can feel it and smell it and I wish I were in that same place. Thanks Neko.

You make getting bit by mosquitoes sound pleasant, like it's just part of the deal.

You lifted me up when I was down, may the Lung lift you even if its in your rear view mirror.
Neko - Thanks for this. You have such a way with language that it makes me wish I were there.
I hope you're "there" sooner than it feels.
