Good morning, Beautiful People! Tomorrow I will be at the Solid Sound Festival at MASS MOCA for the Substack Mystery Hour from 3:30 to 4:30 PM, EST. I am wanting to cast the net here to gather any questions you guys might have, so lay em’ on me! XO!!!
I love the collaboration creativity you and Paul Rigby have together. How did Rigby come up with that insanely beautiful guitar on Vengeance is Sleeping? What did you think when you first heard it - cause it make the hairs on my arms stand up every time.
Hi Neko! I’d love to hear more about your creative process. I know you labor over your lyrics, and the effort shows. But how do your song seeds usually germinate? Lyrics first? Melody? Both? Do you have a set practice for your songwriting or do you just wait for the muse to alight on your shoulder? Thanks for all the great art and I will see you in Berkeley soon!
I really love The Lung and I've enjoyed your music for years. You are such a wonderful writer. Do you think you might have a novel, short story collection, or book of poetry coming out sometime down the line?
Have you ever written a part of a lyric that on reflection made you cringe? Syrupy, sappy or just plain made you shiver, and did a serious rewrite? If so, care to share and resurrect it here, or would you not want to risk alienating or even sickening subscribers...?
I usually manage a grim laugh or two over my own inexplicable "what was I thinkings?" in songsmithing endeavors. No "cuts like a knife" or other stomach churning cliches...
How do you bring a new song to your band for them to learn it and let it unfold? Your songs are so nuanced and complex; do you make a recording first with voice, guitar or ? and then play it for them or just let it go live and see where and how they jump in? Is it difficult to assert your preferences for how the other band members contribute to a song when you have specific ideas on how you hear it in your head? Sorry that's two questions but they're related. Sort of. Thank you for your creative output in the multiverse!
Back in April, country singer Eric Church raised some hackles when he canceled a show to attend the UNC v Duke game in the Final Four. Do you have an equivalent world event that you'd drop a show for or does the schedule of everything else turn to fog when you're touring?
Will Sturgill be making any appearances on Future Merch? She'd look splendid wrapped from Shoulder to Hip around a Tee.
Have you thought about a patreon fund to help pay for recording ie art ? I would consider it very seriously
Can’t wait to see you there!

Please tell us that “Wild Creatures” at 5pm tomorrow at Solid Sound means you will also be performing?!?! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Was the album Furnace Room Lullaby written from personal experience or were many of those songs a fictional account?
Any chance of a reunion of Case/Lang Viers? 🙏🏻

How are you feeling lately? What’s the most beautiful nature happening near you right now? Any words of encouragement for the heart-weary among us?
Have you come across any surprising or interesting differences in your experiences of writing Entering the Lung versus writing and making music?

Thank you for being at Solid Sound.
How did you get here? How many things, large and small, had to happen to get us all here?
