Unique, independent companies are one of the things that make one place different from another place, that make it rewarding to travel somewhere new, that give a place its unique soul.

But the “savings”! 🤬

Offshore. Child labour.Sweatshop Dickensian treatment. Inferior disposable junk. Profits. Unemployment at home. Poverty.

A permanent class of have-nots.

Social justice. Not enough give a shit. Too busy with the brass ring thing.

Status quo benefits? Who?

Thanks. This gave me an interesting and good memory of a family member who understood this.... Will be supporting m local hardware store in East Watertown, MA, a community with large Armenian population. Was tempted to order online, but this changed my mind.

I’m in San Pedro in LA and we still have places like this, even a huge market that is kind of like Etsy in real life (it’s called Crafted) with all local artists and vendors. :)

The one in Japantown? Across from Peace Memorial and has most of the stuff in the basement? That place is wonderful.

I live in San Francisco. I will look for that hardware store. Next time you’re in San Francisco, there’s a cute little shop called Perch in Glen Park. They feature jewelry and art and other really cool things from local artisans. They’ve been able to thrive through the pandemic as their landlord gave them free rent for a while. The nicest people as well.

Hey, what's that hardware store? I've been looking for some carpentry stuff (ask me why ask me why ask me why)

Think she might be referring to Soko Hardware in the Japantown area. Used to regularly go there back in the days when I lived in the city. There's also a fantastic shop in Berkeley, Hida Tool & Hardware, tiny space but chock-full of great stuff, gardening and woodworking tools, beautiful Japanese cooking knives, etc.
