I’m sitting here on the porch and it’s about to rain. The hay trucks are rumbling a low slow hustle down below. (I can still hear my grandmother’s voice as she would grouse, “They better get that hay up before it starts…” Hay on the ground gives me anxiety to this day! Haha!) The smell of milkweed is
The other day I took photos of the flowers in our yard, as I often do. Unknowingly, I took a photo of motherwort. It was only when I zoomed in that I noticed the baroque intricacy of the flowers. A day later I read your post and upon reading your description I knew exactly what you were describing. Thanks for the enrichment.
Truly beautiful as if beauty were not true. But they are and that is that. It’s difficult to pluck out the non natives. When do they fully become vested?
When I walk my dog around my neighborhood, some plants make me smile before I realize it. This, the motherwort, is one of them, for the perfect minuscule individual flowers. Thank you for naming it, I wander around, stopping at every patch of wildflowers and plants, but know very little about them. I live in The Best Little Neighborhood in Madison where we all just go about our lives - no Joneses. The yards are all so interesting, each unique and thriving right now. One extra special patch of Moonflowers down the street are going to be glowing soon. Oh, and my Mom always said "Make hay while the sun shines"!
Love the motherwort photos! Are you following Jeff Vandermeer on Twitter? His home re-wilding project is really amazing - no lawns there, just tons of habitat for birds and raccoons and armadillo and everything else.
Do you sell anything raised on your farm/plantation/habitat? If not, I guess that most farmers wouldn't be so sure that you are a farmer or a hobbyist, a parvenu or perhaps preservationist, or some kind of ecologist. Pick a couple and put them on a sign or an alternative business card. "Neko Case, Preservationist and Ecologist:" I admit to be still being bemused by your big blue sturgeon thing; however, the tribute to Carmen Miranda and John Malkovich in Red2 remains marvelous...
Your property seems absolutely magical... I can feel the humidity and hear the hum of insects and birdsong as I read. It makes me feel peaceful inside.

Leaving there for any reason must be bittersweet.

I could feel the plants as you talked about them. I believe you have words to a song or two in your post. Thank you for sharing.
The bee balm in our yard is CRAZY this year. As are the bunnies. They are everywhere! Endless entertainment for the Schnauzers.
I love walking thru fields of tall grasses and wildflowers.....just wait till the goldenrod pops out!
