They are based in DR Congo and provide emotional support for men and women who have suffered various kinds of trauma from the conflict, including sexual assault, rape, being shot at, having friends and family killed, etc. Mtima also works alongside a wildlife sanctuary and sometimes merges therapy with caring for animals (mainly primates) that suffer from emotional and physical trauma. The war in Congo is rarely covered in the media as it has been going on for a long time and is so complicated. But the lack of humanity and unimaginable atrocities match any other in the world. I was an RN in a Veterans Hospital, where for over 20 years I basically did a working meditation on war. So, the only opinion I have on wars is that I am against them. Period.
I focus on helping kids and picking up plastic on the beach ~ children and the Ocean are my two big hopes.

Oh Neko, to be honest 2024 will truly be a year that will determine so much. I'm scared. So many crucial elections to be held around the world. US, Taiwan, India, Pakistan, Russia.....When I volunteered at the Museum of Occupation in Rīga, Latvia back in 2006, I realised a handful of people control the lives of billions. What we still have is song, dissent.

I would love to see what people recommend for homeless organizations. There are so many unhoused in NYC that I feel a gut punch everytime I see them on the street. I gave a gentleman in a wheelchair $20 recently and did everything I could not to burst into tears in front of him.
Another something just popped up. VA hospitals *were* not much like others so when unsheltered Vets became patients, it was often difficult for them to be inside a building 24/7 and I felt that. It was hard for me and I am healthy as a horse.
Sometimes if they became well enough they walked away on their own. Since it was basically social medicine we didn’t have any time limits on having them with us.
I am here to tell you that sometimes folks live outside because they Cannot live inside. Will forgo TLC food, shelter, and nurse TLC.

One fellow - will never forget him… younger, funny, sweet. He had been outdoors so long that when we brought him in, he would grab cleaning supplies off carts and wash windows. Also street funding at the entrance which tended to startle visitors. We reassured him daily that we appreciated his presence and participation in all ways, and also that he would always have meals and snacks and anything else we could provide.
Long story longer ~ we found another VA facility that was better suited to his talents. 🩵
I'm going to add a plug for state/local advocacy organizations working on systems change. Whether we believe the gov't can really solve our problems, they can certainly create more if there aren't orgs showing up, pushing for progressive, anti-racist change, and holding elected officials accountable. A lot of really important policy changes take root in state legislatures - both good and very, very bad. Fundraising can be a challenge for these orgs, because people like to feel like they are directly impacting someone's life. Giving to advocacy orgs that are aligned with your values can bring about big, systemic change. I direct Voices for Vermont's Children (voicesforvtkids.org) - in recent years we led coalitions to pass mandatory sick days, established an oversight office for the child protection system (which is deeply rooted in racism and classism and needs to be dismantled), increased welfare payments to families in extreme poverty, etc etc. There's a Voices- type organization in every state, as well as independent orgs focused on the environment, criminal legal reform, you name it. Please consider the small but mighty orgs fighting corporate power and fascism in your state!
Against Malaria Foundation funds anti-malaria nets to fight that disease in equatorial countries around the world. Top-rated charity with all independent evaluators!

I don’t know know about particular organizations, but I gave to Central
Arizona Shelter when I lived in AZ.
I was always happy to give away extra cash, but during Lockdown, the numbers of unsheltered people just skyrocketed. Horrible!
At that point I figured it would make more sense to me to give directly to the biggest shelter in Phoenix. They are so poorly funded.
Maybe there’s a local shelter in your area? I bet they really i ow how to get the most of donations.

I supported Save the Children for many years until this year (because of unfortunate financial circumstances on my part). Hopefully I can again soon.
