Hello! I interrupt where the regular Question Time post should be for something slightly different. Substack likes musicians to put music up on the platform, which I also like! However, I am not of a prolific nature so I will show you instead what it looks like when someone who has been in the music biz for thirty years goes “Yeah, I’ll just use the Garage Band app it’ll be easy!” I’ve been making music and producing records for a LONG time but it’s still possible to find an “opponent”in technology. To be fair I am bit neurodivergent and Garage Band is a douche. You wouldn’t believe how long it took me (or how angry I could get) making this. XO!
Been trying to use GB etc to record an album for like, 4 years, by myself. It’s going… not well…
I just… don’t have the head for that type of work… I find it so goddamned aggravating and virtually opposite of intuitive. I’d like to tell you it gets a lot easier, but… find a GB-savvy pal to lend a hand. I think that’s the key.
As for me, I’m hoping my daughter, who is now 7, will figure it out soon (like, before I jettison my laptop from our rooftop) and wants to become my recording engineer, mixer, and social media pro, because seriously… me no likey any of that part.
In summary: self-recording in GB
The music part = yay!
The tech side = I feel like my grandma when we got her set up on “the email” and tried to teach her to use it.

Hello it is I, the intern you never asked for. I found an updated tutorial on audacity. When I was learning it I had to figure it out from old versions and that was super annoying. The one I posted yesterday is also outdated. I don't know if this is useful for you (I also like to be useful), but I hope it is. Not because I want to be special, but because I am very selfishly hoping you will post your own music. I know your studio is in a long term deep fry, so maybe this will help? I listened to your interview on Jon's show a few days ago and you reminded me how much you /love/ this technology so I'm only happy to oblige. Don't throw your phone in the deep fryer with this one tho. Oh my gawd I literally came back here to listen to this because I'm messing around with recording in audacity and I realized I named my last blog the same title and I s2g I didn't remember 🤦🤦 that's embarrassing. But no wonder it was floating in my head. These programs are annoying and it's hard to search through YouTube to find the answers you need and there's lots of frustrating moments. Even for a Professional Millennial™️ whose been using computers before they went through puberty. This is why you need a gen Zer to hang out with. They were still in diapers when they learned how to mix their first album. I wish I was kidding.
Also I've never heard anything good about garage band. I owned a Mac for 15 years and I could never figure it out. Audacity took about a day to learn basics, and I'm still learning stuff about it. It's also free open software so that's nice. I just inherited a MacBook and I was able to edit a video with audio I recorded with audacity, and I could never do that with my Mac (not for free at least).
